The BOM Level in the Bill of Materials

Navigating Bill of Materials (BOMs)

BOM = PARTS / LINE ITEMS

Understanding BOMs

BOMs, or Bill of Materials, constitute the third level of the e-manage|ONE data structure and are where parts are associated. In each level of this structure, you can identify which one you're working with by examining the "name" column. For instance, the option level has "Option Name," the phase level has "Phase Name," and the BOM level features "BOM Name." Within each Phase, you can have numerous BOMs, each with its own distinctive name.

Making Global Changes in BOMs

When you modify the customer discount, margin, markup, or sale price within a BOM row in the grid, it affects all Adjustable items attached to it, adjusting each to match the value you specified. Adjusting the pre-tax sell at the BOM level prompts e-manage|ONE to analyze all Adjustable items and determine how to reach the price you've set by applying the same margin, markup, or customer discount, in line with your chosen pricing type.

Editable Cells in BOM Rows

Editable cells in BOM Rows provide flexibility, and while the column names can be customized by users, you can always right-click any column header to identify the original name at the bottom of the pop-up menu. Remember to press the TAB key after altering a cell's value to save it, as there is no separate save button for editing cells. Here's a breakdown of these cells:

  • BOM Name: This cell allows you to set the name of the BOM. When you create a new BOM, the default name is "New BOM," but you can change it to something that better describes the BOM. BOM names do not appear on a quote; changing the name is solely for organizational purposes.

  • New Margin, New Markup, and New Customer Discount: Depending on your chosen pricing type, the BOM level permits changes only in the appropriate cell. Lump Sum Sale and Lump Sum Sale + Tax enable adjustments to the New Margin, Discount From List allows changes to the New Discount, and Markup permits modifications to the New Markup column.

  • Pre-Tax Sell: This field alters the overall customer price for this BOM, considering tax based on your chosen pricing type.

  • Starters: This cell is used for kits. A kit must already have been added at the phase level for this cell to have any effect. Any kit parts on the BOM marked as Starters will have their QTY multiplied by this number, and then further multiplied by the Rows cell.

  • Adders: Similar to Starters, this cell is used for kits. A kit must have been added at the phase level. Any kit parts on the BOM marked as Adders will have their QTY multiplied by this number, and then further multiplied by the Rows cell.

  • Rows: This cell is also used for kits. A kit must have been added at the phase level for this cell to have an effect. Any kit parts on the BOM marked as Starters or Adders will have their QTY multiplied by this number, and then further multiplied by the Rows cell.

The Right-Click Context Menu for BOMs

When you right-click on a BOM, a context menu appears, offering functionality beyond what the grid provides. To apply changes to multiple selected BOMs, ensure they are highlighted in the grid before right-clicking. Here's a breakdown of the elements in this menu:

  • Add From Search: This option is used to add parts to the selected BOM by conducting a search using one or more criteria to locate the part, and then using the Add QTY cell to specify the quantity of items to be added.

  • Add From Parts Catalog: This function is used to add parts to the selected BOM by navigating the pre-built Parts Catalog. You can browse through catalog folders to locate the desired parts and use the "Add QTY" cell to specify the quantity to be added to the selected BOM.

  • Add From Library: You can add parts to the selected BOM by utilizing the pre-built library of parts. Navigate through library folders to find the parts you need and use the "Add QTY" cell to specify the quantity to be added to the selected BOM.

  • Add From Favorites: This option allows you to add parts to the selected BOM using a grid of your personal favorites. Any part can be marked as a favorite by checking the "Favorite" checkbox wherever you see the part. You can then use the Add QTY cell to add the part(s) you want to the selected BOM.

  • New Option: This function creates a new option along with a new phase and a new BOM, with the BOM selected so you can immediately add new parts.

  • New Phase: Generates a new phase under the option to which the currently selected phase belongs, along with a new BOM, allowing you to promptly add new parts.

  • New BOM: Creates a new BOM for the currently selected phase, along with a new BOM selection for adding parts.

  • Copy: Copies the currently selected BOM(s) for pasting into another phase, the same phase, or a phase in another project's BOM window.

  • Paste: Allows you to paste any copied phases from the clipboard into the currently selected phase's option.

  • Delete Selected: Permanently deletes the selected phase(s) and any BOMs that are children of the selected phase(s).

  • Add / Modify BOM Picture: This function is not used on BOMs since the BOMs are not broken out on the quote.

  • Change Name: Allows you to change the name of the selected BOM, preferably done directly in the grid.

  • Move To A Different Phase: This option will move (without copying) the selected BOM to another phase within the project. It provides a dropdown list box displaying all phases, along with their option names. You can select the phase you want to move the BOM to and then click the Move button.

Hide / Unhide Options on Quote: You can choose to hide option details on a per-quote basis by right-clicking on the line item(s) and selecting “Hide/Unhide Options on Quote.” You can select multiple lines at once or use the checkbox in the grid to choose which items to hide.
